BOOK LAUNCH – ‘Bring the Rising Home!’ ( publ. culture matters, Sept. 2017) is the latest book of poetry by Merthyr writer Mike Jenkins, it includes 22 poems alongside 22 images from the paintings of Merthyr artist Gustavius Payne.

This book includes several poems about the Merthyr Rising of 1831 and also Mike’s first published poems in Welsh, one of which won the Chair for a learner’s poem in last year’s National Eisteddfod.

Mike is a proud member of Yes Cymru and former member of the Welsh Socialist Republican Movement, Cymru Goch & Welsh Socialist Alliance. He has co-edited ‘Red Poets’ magazine – an annual magazine of left-wing poetry primarily from Wales – for 23 years. Mike won Wales Book of the Year for a collection of stories ‘Wanting to Belong”(Seren) and was shortlisted for his book of poems and stories in Merthyr dialect ‘Barkin!’ (Carreg Gwalch).

Gus Payne is a figurative painter born in Merthyr Tudful. He has been elected a member of The Welsh Group of artists and exhibited widely both in Wales and elsewhere. He collaborated in 2011 on a joint project with Mike Jenkins entitled ‘Dim Gobaith Caneri’, with exhibitions in many venues , including MOMA in Machynlleth.  Some of Gus’s work can also bee seen at the exhibition in SHO Gallery on the day of #IndyFest and the week following.
